Lawsuit Filed Over 10-Year Delay in Monarch Butterfly Endangered Species Ruling

Two conservation organizations have filed a lawsuit against a federal agency, alleging excessive delays in determining whether monarch butterflies should receive protection under the Endangered Species Act.

The groups have been seeking endangered species protection for monarch butterflies for approximately a decade, according to information from the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.

The lawsuit challenges the federal agency’s timeline for making a final determination on the monarch butterfly’s conservation status. The iconic orange and black butterflies have experienced significant population declines in recent years due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change.
