Southern Arkansas University has received a $1,189,647 grant from the Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council (ANCRC) to renovate Talbot Hall, bringing the council’s total investment in the SAU campus to more than $6 million.
The funding will support renovations to the historic residence hall, which was built in the early 1960s. ANCRC’s previous investments have funded restoration projects for Oliver Recital Hall, the Greek Theatre, Ozmer House, Overstreet Hall, Alexander House, Ozmer-Alexander Historic Farmstead and Learning Center, Bussey Hall, Talley Hall, Mt. Prospect Church, and Greene Hall. Talbot Hall marks the fourth residence hall to receive ANCRC support.
“SAU appreciates the continued partnership with ANCRC and is thankful for this award, which will help protect and maintain the fourth historic residence hall,” said SAU President Dr. Bruno Hicks. “These historic halls have been part of our campus for over 60 years, and we are excited that the recent and upcoming renovations preserve both the historic nature of the buildings as well as increase the energy efficiency of the halls, all while improving the comfort for our students.”
The 37,329-square-foot residence hall, located on the northern end of campus, houses approximately 170 students across three wings. Named after D.O. Talbot, who served on the SAU Board of Trustees from 1938 to 1975, the building consists of four connected units and includes a computer lab, vending room, laundry room, and lobby area.
Renovations beginning in summer 2026 will include restoration of interior stairways and replacement of approximately 170 single-pane windows with energy-efficient, double-pane glass. The hall currently houses the First-Year Experience and Health and Fitness Living Learning Communities, as well as members of Mulerider athletic teams including football and tennis.
