FAYETTEVILLE — Six people were shot early Sunday a block north of Dickson Street after a fight broke out on West Avenue as Halloween crowds filled the entertainment district, Fayetteville police said.

All six were taken to local hospitals with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening, according to a police department statement. No arrests had been made as of Sunday morning.

Officers were called at about 1:41 a.m. to West Avenue near Watson Street for a shooting. Police said a number of officers had been assigned to work the Dickson Street area because of the Halloween and game-day crowds, and they were nearby when the shots were reported.

"Officers located multiple individuals suffering from gunshot wounds and immediately provided medical assistance," the department said.

The preliminary investigation indicates an altercation on West Avenue came before the shooting, police said. Detectives are still working to determine what happened.

Several people were being questioned in connection with the shooting, police told 5News. Video posted on social media showed officers holding at least three people face down in the street as bystanders gathered, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. Police have not said whether anyone detained at the scene was a suspect.

The block of West Avenue where the shooting happened was closed Sunday morning while officers worked the scene.

The shooting came a few hours after the Arkansas Razorbacks lost to Missouri 34-10 in a Saturday night game at Razorback Stadium, on a Halloween weekend that had drawn crowds to Dickson Street.

Police have not released the names or ages of the six people who were shot. The department said its information is preliminary and may be updated as the investigation continues.
